What is Endovenous Chemical Thermal Ablation?

Endovenous chemical thermal ablation (EVTA or EVLT for ednovenous laser therapy) is a treatment for varicose veins that uses a laser or high-frequency radio waves to close a defective vein. Endovenous means "inside the vein". In this procedure, your doctor will locate the defected vein using ultrasound and insert a catheter into the vein, usually just below the knee. Then a salt water solution and an anesthetic will be injected into the vein, followed by laser or radiofrequency waves. Heat is what help remove the defected vein and the body will absorb any remaining tissue. But not to worry, you will be given local anesthesia for this procedure, so discomfort is at a minimum. You can expect to return home the same day. Most patients will wear compression hose for a few weeks after the procedure. Recovery usually takes anywhere between a few days to a couple of weeks.
